I live in a tree trunk. I live in a barn. I live in a shoebox. I’m down on the farm…
So say the animals (and much more) of I Live in a Tree Trunk. Each animal, in simple text by Meg Fleming and simple art by Brandon James Scott, tell us where they live. Things are aimed at the aged three and up, with a few rhymes to help pass the time.
There is nothing OMG Best Book Ever! to this picture book, but there is a lot of fun going on within the pages of this story. Things are clever and you see a wonderful variety of animals telling us about their living situation. You will see such things as squirrels, goats, salamanders, groundhogs, camels, and a few you might not be familiar with. You see how some animals have similar places to live, though they can be called different things. It is a good introduction to homes, familiar and not so familiar (after all you humans might live in a house and sleep in a bed, but some of us sleep in nests and burrows and such).
Overall, this is a nice book to have in your child’s personal library. As I read this book (due mid-April 2023) via a readers copy online, I am sure of the dimensions and size of things, but something tells me it might not work well in a reading group setting. Though the reader (with help or the reader of illustrations) will enjoy quiet time looking over everything and making up their own stories.
