I’m 100% that bitch. And I don’t need a DNA test.
J. D. Robb’s Encore in Death is the 56th installment in her long running futuristic mystery series. If you’re a fan of the series, it’s a perfectly adequate installment. It would not be a good entry point if you’re looking to start something new.
Let’s face it, these books are comfort reading. Like most long running series, there has been extensive character development and world building. This means that there are numerous references to people, places, and events that were key to previous installments, but make little sense here unless you’ve read those previous books. And, honestly, that’s pretty much why I am still reading these books. I like these people and enjoy spending time with them. The mysteries are just an excuse to do so.
The mystery is fine. The red herring makes it interesting for a bit. Ultimately, though, if this was an episode of a season of tv, I’d refer to it as a filler episode.
That said, let’s play a game. Let’s dream cast the series characters! (And this is completely appropriate since the mystery involves a Hollywood power couple.) If you’ve read any of the series and would like to play along, please make your changes and/or suggestions in the comments below. I’d love to learn your thoughts.
