If Sherlock Holmes meet the Scooby Gang (only if they were a frog, turtle, and a taco-loving beaver), you’d get Bog Gone! Volume 1: A graphic novel. These three friends try to solve the case of the missing families of their town, while the Sherlock Holmes like creature (and our young frog heroine’s favorite detective), Mr. Seymour Warts, solves a related case. The humor is typical kid and the art typical fun for the younger crowd. Ages seven to 10 the best audience, but younger could as well. The artwork is clever as each story is set in its own style. The “now and kids” world filled with bright colors and the other detective is old school black and white.
I am going to say that the authors name is not P. Knuckle Jones, but who am I to judge? However, regardless of what they were christened, they are pretty funny and know a good story when they see it. Fast paced, but broken down in chapters to help the read aloud time to be broken into sections, or to help an early reader pace themselves, the story is well constructed. There are red herrings (not the fish, the clue type) and more fun mystery devices. There are well meaning friends trying to build a trap to catch a monster that do not always worked out as planned, and our heroine, Finder, is a fun frog to know.
The switching between the two parallel stories is not new but did make things interesting. I like the extreme different styles (all color vs. black and white). This, and the minimal but strong details make it fun to “read the illustrations” as well as reading text. This book feels like it will be a good “girl power” storyline, but anyone can read. For fans of The InvestiGators!
