Before I got out of school for winter break I asked my school librarian for drive suggestions, since I had to endure some long flights. I’ve been reading a lot of mystery lately, so I asked for some suggestions in that genre. They all sounded good and seemed like things that I would enjoy, so I checked them out. Fast forward to about a week later, I started one of her suggestions, We Were Liars by E. Lockhart…
We Were Liars is about a girl named Cadence (Cady for short) that comes from a very wealthy family. She lives with just her mom after her dad left for Colorado. Every summer, Cady and her mom go to the family’s private island with her aunt’s, grandparents, and cousins. Cady had three cousins her she to which she is particularly close, Johnny, Mirren, and Gat (who is not actually Cady’s cousin, Johnny’s mother’s boyfriend is Gat’s uncle). Together, they call themselves the Liars. Then, the summer Cady is 15 (summer 15, as she calls it), she has a terrible accident of which she doesn’t know the details. Over the rest of the book, Cady tries to figure out the details of her accident…
In my opinion, the description of this book makes it seem interesting, or at least something I’d read to pass the time. But, to be honest, this book fell short. I don’t like the writing style and I feel like, for the majority of the book, the plot was boring and uneventful. So, read this book if the plot seems interesting, and I don’t mean to offend anyone who likes the book, but it simply wasn’t for me.
