This book was a recommendation from my sister. I listened to the audiobook, which was great.
It starts out with a bang and only has a few small slow spots in the middle before the intense ending. I don’t think this is a spoiler, because it happens in the very beginning – the Bennett family is the victim of an attempted carjacking. The worst happens and their daughter is shot by the bad guys. It’s heartbreaking, obviously because it’s a young girl who tragically dies, but also because the (albeit short) build up to her murder is just normal family stuff where you’re learning about them and what a great family they are. They’re just in the car on the way back from a soccer game, and you can tell how much they love each other.
The Bennetts learn quickly that it’s a mob-connected attack, and they’re in danger. They decide in the middle of the night (after the FBI shows up at their door) to join witness protection. It takes its toll on the entire family as they try to cope with losing a family member and losing their entire lives and support systems at the same time.
The slow parts I mentioned were the family piddling around trying to make witness protection work. They’re not that bad, and a necessary part of the storytelling. It speeds up though when the dad decides it’s up to him to make things right and get their lives back on track. I don’t want to spoil anything because it’s totally worth the read!
Oh I just remembered that they did something I love – they said the title of the book in the actual book. There’s an article entitled “What Happened to the Bennetts?” because they basically just quickly disappeared from their lives and nobody knew what happened!
