“Constance, a modern, young illustrator, takes revenge for the thousands of attacks suffered daily by women with a comic of her own, titled The Amazing Camel Toe, celebrating the adventures of an anti-macho vigilante in tight, panther leggings”
And Claire Duplan gives life to this SuperWoman. This package of Womanhood and Badassery! The Amazing Camel Toe is a graphic novel that is about “the worst of
the punks.” Constance made her heroine to be a better version of herself. More confident, more able to stand up to misogyny and the patriarchy. She might mosh in the pit at the local bar but runs away when it is aimed at her. Until finally she decides enough is enough and in a #MeToo moment starts her version #SitOnYourDick.
The language is adult, as are the images shown. We have breasts (and may I say Playboy could learn that is what real breasts look like), leg hair, pussy power and more. It is not “Girl Power” but “Bad-Bitch Power!” And it is extreme, but maybe not extreme enough. We have a wonderful look at life of a woman in all its mixed up, screwed up wonderful glory (and gory).
There are some images and concepts not for everyone (I honestly am not completely sure how I feel about Constance using her diluted menstruation blood for watering her plants) and did we really need to see so much drinking? Therefore, this book is a nice way to get people talking not just about the big picture, but how the little things play into it, too.
The black and white art (a few pages are in color to get the proverbial ball rolling) fits the theme and the sketchiness of the art itself shows the edges in ways more traditional looking art or “fleshed out” art might not be able to get. From before I realized Duplan was a French artist, I said, maybe this is a French setting as it has edges to it that bite, slap you, and then make love to you.
