This book was recommended to me by nobody. My BFF did recommend Colleen Hoover, but I think this may be one of her earlier books. Holy crap I did not like it. First of all, I listened to the audiobook, and the male narrator (Deacon Lee) had a voice or manner of speaking that kinda made my skin crawl? I’m not sure exactly what it was, but I did not like when he talked. Unfortunately, he talked for about half of the book.
Which I must say I did not finish. It’s not a rousing review that I didn’t even realize that I didn’t finish the book. A few listens in, I upped the speed to 1.5 times normal. That didn’t help. I had planned to just fast forward to nearly the end just to see what happened. I legitimately didn’t even care enough to do that. I got a notification from the application that I borrow library books from that my loan had ended. I didn’t even realize it.
So, onto the story. The girl (Skylar? Brynn? Looked it up – Tate) is moving in with her brother to save money / finish college / something like that. She meets a creepy guy in the elevator, and then the other main character Miles. I almost said Niles, because that’s how little I cared about them. Their “meet cute” is not at all cute. Tate finds Miles passed out drunk in front of her brother’s door, and she basically thinks he’s going to rape and murder her, but it’s fine because it’s her brother’s best friend. It doesn’t get much better from there. Miles wants to have sex with Tate, but not a relationship. She’s not allowed to ask why, or know anything from his past. It’s totally fine to have a friends with benefits situation, but this one seems aggressively over the top. They actually shop for curtains and a rug together and Tate starts falling in love with him. I think that’s where I stopped because I couldn’t care less if they both died at that point. If anyone read this book and wants to give me a Cliffs Notes review of the ending, please do!
