The story of Wondering Around by Meg Fleming was so-so for me. There is nothing wrong with it, but I was not “grabbed” by it. The story is simple, you travel around nature seeing and being curious. And when you do this, you will find how little things can connect with one big thing, making it something wonderful and grand.
It is the illustrations of Richard Jones that I really liked. They are bold and soft. Brash and calm. They are colorful and well, they are colorful! You are not “blown off the page” even with the sharpness of them, but they get the point across delightfully. With some of the most detailed simplistic details I have recently seen, it makes me want to frame some of the images. They are what really moves the story along. The text is a nice addition, making an overall good package.
This is a book that would make a special gift for a younger child’s birthday or one who likes nature or animals. While this is a delightful read for one-on-one, it might be harder to do with a larger group as some of the main points and details (such as a special red flash on a few pages, or the prints you are following) might be lost.
I think this is a book that needs at least two readings, and for certain while you are in a comfortable spot to read. It is an experience book, therefore, you need to make the experience as smooth as possible.
