I ended up DNFing this book at 20 percent. I am sorry, but this is dragging. It doesn’t help that the book keeps jumping back and forth and I really don’t understand the cult that the main character, Vern was involved with. And I assume this is in a different time and place than our Earth? Once again, this book dragged and I just didn’t feel much like pushing past the 20 percent mark because everything felt so slow and I just started getting bored with the book.
“Sorrowland” follows a young pregnant woman named Vern who runs away from her community. Vern ends up giving birth to twins and decides to live off the land with her children Howling and Feral. FYI, do not give me that look, I didn’t name these children.
So Vern, eh. I guess the only thing I can say about her is that she’s a black albino? I really don’t have much else to say about her. We hear about her time back home in Cainland and I am still confused about the different characters we meet there. Everyone started to blend together. The children felt weird to me in some way. I wonder if I should have kept reading to find out if they were real or what? Also Vern running around in I guess her pj gown for like 2 years felt so unrealistic to me. I don’t know. There was a lot going on with this book that I wondered if this was just some giant allegory that I was missing.
The writing just didn’t work for me. I think the issue that I had is that I kept wondering about the plot of the book. Cause it seemed to get totally lost in the filler that was going on. I just don’t know a good way to have set up this book. But I just didn’t get anything that was happening.
