An adorable coming of age with lots of humor story is the best way to describe Secrets of Camp Whatever Volume One. Monsters, adventures, and snacks come together when a handful of children go to a bit of a creepy, but cool, summer camp. Adventure awaits! Just watch out for fog leeches.
Chris Grine created characters that are relatable, diverse, and are full of surprises. Willow, our main character, and her friends are sent to a summer camp for a few weeks. Willow does not want to move to this spooky town or go to this spooky camp. However, once she gets there (having to get past weird clowns, a bully, and the fog) she learns that there are secrets around every corner.
This is not your dads summer camp (even if it is Willow’s dads old one) and this year they promise no campers will go missing. Again. But that is the least of the problems Willow and the gang will face. The cook might be a vampire, the camp nurse is nice, yet seems to know more than she is saying, what is up with the bizarre stone garden gnome statues, why is the odd caretaker sneaking around, and who stole the snacks that have Willow’s extra batteries for her hearing aids?
Magic, mystery, and mayhem pile up as Willow and friends solve the mysteries of the camp, find out what true friendship is all about, and might even be able to get some swimming in between adventures. That is, if something in the water doesn’t get them first.
Ages 10 up.
