I got this book for 1.99! you cannot beat a book for that price in my opinion. Especially one that has a sci-fi bent. This is the story of Kat Dubois who is an immortal stuck in the body of an 18 year old… she is 38 years old but because her body is stuck at 18 she somehow has the hormones of an 18 year old woman too? That actually sounds horrid and thankfully the author doesn’t focus on that too much. (Please notice cover model of the book looks nowhere near 18).
Kat was for about a decade an assassin for the senate of immortals and used a sword to track down ‘traitors’. But she has been retired for 3 years, owns and operates a tattoo parlour and in her spare time finding missing people using her ‘gift’. When her brother disappears and a really old immortal she used to be close with and had a massive crush on turns up and tells her about her brother, she goes into action tracking him down.
When I read the book I had never heard of the author and never read any of her other books. The story was good… I mean, I was mostly engaged and she did a good job keeping the story moving without too much superfulous information, but the whole time I was way more interested in the other characters and confused why on earth they would have the story be about this girl. Heck, even the bad guy is waaaaay more interesting.
Turns out, this is a follow up series. Ink Witch does reference other characters and past events a lot. I didn’t get overly fussed about it, sometimes it’s nice to start in the middle and figure it out.
All in all, these are nice easy reads. I just find the main character the least interesting of the other ‘main characters’ (if that makes any sense.)
I would recommend this book as a summer read. And I haven’t decided if I’ll continue with the series or go back and start from the beginning.
