Dragon Kingdom of Wrenly V01 The Coldfire Curse by Jordan Quinn

Dragon Kingdom of Wrenly V02 Shadow Hills by Jordan Quinn

I like graphic novels and occasionally a cute, light read. When the two come from the same source you have a hit or miss if I will like it or not. No in-between. And this time we have a hit.

The first book in the Dragon Kingdom of Wrenly is The Coldfire Curse. Jordan Quinn and Glass House Graphics created a book about dragons saving the day, their kingdom, the human kingdom and all the other kingdoms of this magical realm. The second book is called Shadow Hills. Due to the averaging out of the rating of these two books, they are a strong (so far) four rating.

Book one is just an adorable, easy book for the adult to read, but packed with adventure for the 7-8- to 10-year-olds. This book is about three dragons who learn of a legend, must deal with a curse and along the way they make good friends. You, the adult, know they will be okay, the curse will be stopped and probably who the real bad guys (or dragons) are. The graphic novel illustrations are perfectly detailed, they are bright and cute. I really could not wait for more in the series (hence why I got excited when I saw that book two was out as well).

Book two continues the adventures with a new adventure of finding lava rocks to try and stop a deadly storm coming. This brings the dragons to a world where everything is gray, and the dragons are almost living statues. And while I still felt it was adorable, the story moved slower. With that said the ages aimed for will be on the edge of their seats waiting to find out what happens to their dragon friends and what will happen in book three. Each book finishes that storyline, but leaves it open for the next book.

These books reminded me of an easy The Dragon Prince (a television series from the creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender), if told from the point of view of Zym (the baby dragon/the dragon prince) and dealt with him and other dragons. Though humans play a small role. And while I have not read the young novels of a similar name, I am curious to see if they are “parallel stories” where dragon and human have adventures during the same time frame.
