The Yawns Are Coming! by Christopher Eliopoulos

May 8, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Who has not had a yawn sneak up on them? Then another? And another? The two kids in this story have just that happen in The Yawns Are Coming! by Christopher Eliopoulos.

Yawns is a cute story about two best friends wanting to play all night long at a sleepover, but how the Yawns (and their friends) have other plans. While the kids bravely fight the Yawns, they are no match! The funny antics of these two best friends (and the Yawns and their friends) is refreshing. There is no “bad behavior” of kids running around, being problems and causing mayhem. They are just two kids fighting the good fight like any of us might do.

The simple text and bold images make a great bedtime (or quiet time) read. The Yawns are adorable, the two friends even more so in their adorable pajamas. The colors jump off the page. The little to no detail allows you to focus on the what details and images that are present and to move the story along. It would make a fun lap sized board book. All ages (but most likely ages 3 to 5) can get a kick out of this new story. The older readers (aged 6 to 7) could read with help; the even older crowds could use as a read alone.

Eliopoulos is the illustrator for several of the Ordinary People Change the World series and the author/illustrator for Monster Mayhem and Cosmic Commandos. Ordinary people are aimed for younger reads and the other two for second to low fourth grade readers.

  • Sandra Hennessey on Book Club Discussion: The Glass HotelPerhaps you should stop reading her novels. Station 11 is the outlier— her other novels are much more like this one. I love her writing...
