Let’s end the year with my favorite holiday, Halloween. Eenie Meenie Halloweenie is a clever rhyming book that uses the child’s imagination to pick out a Halloween costume. Should she be an elephant or penguin? She is sure whatever it will be, it is going to be something she can make and the clever ideas on how to make a penguin or monkey will be great for dress up time any time of the year. Her solution is clever, if not necessarily the most realistic, solution.
The illustrations are delightfully cute and clever. Looking at the pages help gives you ideas what she might be thinking about becoming. They are bright, colorful and compliment the text nicely. You can play with it as well (names of the animals, what letters they start with and counting them). But also, they are just lovely images that go along with the story. You can read one-on-one more likely easier than to a larger group but does work for a smaller story time setting. The entire book is just fun. There is not a lot of traditional action, but the rhyming is bouncy and keeps you moving along.
Due mid-to-late July 2020, this book will be a fun Halloween book, but also an anytime book. It is fun and probably not something you will dislike reading over and over (okay, maybe three or four times max then it might get a bit too much). It is sweet, maybe a bit sugary sweet for some people, but even this grump liked what was going on.
