Leftovers can be one of the best meals. It has seasoned. It usually has the bonus of being something you made too much of as you like it, not because it is left over because you did not like what you made. However, Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast was as stale as if real French toast or pancakes were leftovers.
Josh Funk’s book was in our sale books recently. I usually enjoy them as you get to find an older title that you either forgot about or find for the first time. Yet, this story about not competing against your friends, the villains winning and careful where you step in the refrigerator just was moldy. There is supposed to be humor, but I did not find it in the situation. The lesson falls flatter than Lady Pancake and do not get me started on the illustrations. Puns are as spoiled as three day past the due date milk.
Okay, I will get me started on the illustrations. Brendan Kerney took time and effort to create these characters, and for that I can appreciate them. Yet, French toast should not have a mustache and my maple syrup bottle better not have a sad face on it. Even if it is empty. These characters in Funk’s story are just downright creepy.
With all that said, the buyer of this sale book is over joyed by it. She was laughing and reading aloud to us. She purchased a larger quantity than usual, as she knew there was an audience for it and no matter how much of a fan I am of French toast or pancakes, Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast and I will not be sharing breakfast anytime soon.
