The Ruby Princess Runs Away (Jewel Kingdom #1) by Jahnna N. Malcolm is a typical Princess story with a modern kick: she saves the day. And while these stories can be fluffy (and Ruby Princess is light) it does feel slightly stronger than many stories of this genre. I am also actually, looking forward to the others in the series. Of course, I am hoping that they are not too repetitive.
The story that could be repeated too strongly is that the Princess does not think she is worthy of being the princess of her new kingdom. She was taught the basics (government and school related things) but she was not taught how to rule. She is worried she will not be a good ruler as she does not know how to be a good ruler. Therefore, our girl Roxanne (the Ruby Princess) runs off the day of her and the other girl’s coronation. But of course, with the help of a few old and new friends, she figures out the secret of being a good princess (a good person basically) and along the way, also uncovers a plot to try and stop her from becoming the Ruby Princess.
The series is going to be a typical princess story. There will be few surprises (for the adult reader) as you follow along with Roxanne and her cousins, Sabrina the Sapphire Princess, Emily the Emerald Princess, and Demetra the Diamond Princess. There are evil wizards, really bad-guy henchmen and even a dragon. The (mostly girls, as it is girly, but of course anyone interested in princesses could read) 7-to-10-year-old reader will wonder what is next. These seem to be a reprint of the 1997 Jeweled Kingdom books.
