I picked up a reader copy of You’re Missing It! on a whim. Looking at the cover I thought: Okay, bright vibrant illustrations? Check. Crazy cartoon illustrations on top of that? Check. Why do you want to read it? Answer: Because I can.
And I was glad I did read Brady Smith and Tiffani Theissen’s (yes, the actress) book. This husband and wife team created clever text and illustrations. There are hidden elements that you need to view as you read along with a young boy finding adventures, as his father sits and stares at his phone (the adult will appreciate some of the “images” that pop up from it. You can guess what the dad is reading/hearing/watching, and it is not the butterfly or the squirrels or the dogs or the park where all these crazy adventures are happening.
The book is modern in theme (Hey there, look up and you do not know what you will find) and it has that graffiti look to the illustrations to keep the modern look to it. And while it probably will not become a classic, it is a fun book to read.
My only complaint about this book is of course the adult who is actually reading a book already knows not to look always at their phone! Even as a kid I would watch a TV show and say, “Why are they telling me to not watch TV on a TV show?” But that is a small thing compared to how much fun you will have with your child while reading this!
