I live in a state where Ted “Zodiac Killer” Cruz beat Beto O’Rouke in the Senate, where Greg Abbot succeeded Rick Perry as Governor and where we are so pro-life anti- choice we are considering sentencing women who make the personal decision to have an abortion to the death penalty. Some days it just feels impossible but it isn’t! And when you’re ready to laugh a little through your outrage Erin Gibson will be there for you with Feminasty.
I read Gibson’s Feminasty last week when news was first breaking that Georgia, and later Alabama as well as my homestate of Texas, were writing unconstitutional laws related to abortion in hopes of getting a case in front of the Trumpified Supreme Court to potentially (definitely) overturn Roe v Wade. This timing was not intentional but the sinister atmosphere of the week certainly added an additional layer to an already phenomenal piece of writing. Feminasty has been out for less than a year and I am desperately praying Gibson is busy writing a follow up to cover all the topics she left out as well as the new ones that have sprung up these past few months.
Well, that’s it. Can you believe we covered so much and still didn’t get to INCELS, middle school period bathroom breaks, the struggle of trans women, pregnant detainees, Hollywood being suprised First Wives Club was a hit, sexism in China, the corporatization of International Women’s Day, eating disorders, child marriage in America, GOP sex scandals, obstacles for female attorneys and the problem with gendering jobs in the first place, Hollywood being surprised Bridesmaids was a hit, sexual assault in the Olympics, female artificial intelligence, reproductive care on campus, female incarceration, bikini season, workplace discrimination against mothers, imposter syndrome, loan discrimination, Hollywood being surprised Girls Trip was a hit, vocal fry, One Million Moms, and when the FUCK is Harriet Tubman gonna show up on my twenty-dollar bills?!
Despite not having time to cover the above topics comedy writer Erin Gibson touches on topics like: Mike Pence being the fucking Worst, #METOO, the problem with the makeup industry (hint: it is controlled mostly by men), Betsey DeVos also being the fucking Worst, the trouble with May/December relationships (of which she has a lot of personal experience), being cautioned against getting a preventative double mastectomy by her doctor for cosmetic reasons, STDs (namely Herpes), and abortion.
Feminasty is refreshingly honest and incredibly funny. I was unaware of Gibson prior to this book but she is a Emmy nominated writer known for her political commentary and social satire who I am now following on Twitter. She is a talented writer for sure presenting several complicated topics, along with a crapload of data, in an entertaining manner peppering personal anecdotes throughout.
It is hard to be a woman and it is getting increasingly harder but Erin is here for you.
