I recently heard that children who like dinosaurs could have a higher IQ. I do not know if that is true, but I do know that anyone that can pronounce Apatosaurus or Parasaurolophus has a
grasp on language.
However, Dinosaur Roar! by Michael Paul, does not have a pronunciation key. This made it a bit awkward to try and read if you are not paleontologist or a longtime lover of the dinosaur crew. And there is no scientific information, just basic facts to each creature. And yet, it is meant to be a book for the beginning dinosaur fan.
As I was reading the limited text, I thought that it would be a good board book. And come to find out, someone else thought so, too. A board book would be better for most children/readers as this traditional larger size can be awkward to hold even for an adult, let alone a child. And a board book would be a bit sturdier than just a hardcover and paper pages.
However, the largest issue for me is that the cartoon illustrations might not be for everyone. These illustrations are “unreal” and “cute” not giving a lot of substance to them or even the text. They seem to be in the line of we do not know the actual colors of dinosaurs so Paul picked whatever color he wanted to keep your attention.
Yet, despite the issues I have, this is a good for the young kid who likes dinosaurs. It is just different than what my personal tastes prefer.
