I was new to the North West and wanted something comfortable to slip into book-wise and so made this one my first choice for the year. I’m always in the middle of a couple books at the same time and had finished this first so it is my first review for this awesome group!!
The Magnolia Story, as with all things Magnolia – Chip and Joanna Gains branding – is pretty much what you would expect. They write about themself which is also what they portray in their HGTV show Fixer Upper. If you know the show, you know to expect shiplap. Similarly, this book is on theme. Several of the stories had been shared during their show or in interviews but the book went a little deeper.
I loved that the book travels thematically through their life rather than chronologically, which really gives them an opportunity to build a stronger narrative. The story is told through both voices and interwoven throughout. They are quite open about their faith but without being forceful about it, which strikes a nice balance.
The common thread throughout seems to be stepping boldly into risk. They both have very different personalities but it works for them. Personally, I would kill my husband if he told me we were moving, yet again, and he had already bought the house (or houseboat). Somehow it works for them. I was inspired by their dedication and integrity. This book is like a Hallmark movie; you aren’t going to be terribly challenged by the content, but you will probably feel better after experiencing it.
