SKULLS! Yes, you have one. Yes, I have one. Yes, your dog has one. Yes, even a pirate has one!
Blair Thornburgh’s narrator takes you through the world of skulls in a very scientific but simplistic and story formatted, way. Follow the story along as she tells you all the great things skulls can do for you and things about skulls. The afterwards has interesting facts about skulls that do not lend themselves easily to the story itself.
This would be a good book to read to an early-aged class learning about basic human body science. It is not necessarily a great bed-time read, but I could see it as a non-scary, but slightly scary (our heroine tells us some people are afraid of skulls but not “you” the person she is telling the story to/the one reading the story), Halloween story. Also, a slightly more advanced beginning reader could find themselves lost in the forty-odd pages reading (with assistance).
The illustrations are the weak point for me. While I can and do appreciate the work that Scott Campbell put into them, they are sloppy and not very appealing to my eyes. The colors and images all blend together and the over-the-top extreme eyes, mouth and hair (not to mention skulls) take away from the actually very interesting story.
Due out in mid-July of this year, make this a pre-order for your classroom or young child that might be interested in things not the usual route for stories and/or interests.
