Me, Myselfie & I: A Cautionary Tale is the latest compilation from author (also actress and all around busy gal) Jamie Lee Curtis and the wonderful illustrator, Laura Cornell. Perhaps this story is not as strong as their books of the past, but it is still on point and a contemporary issue is addressed.
The rhyming text was at first a bit off putting, yet, it was perfect for the story. It makes a serious story more accessible and gives a better understanding of the subject, but it is not being preachy about it. However, maybe this should be aimed at the parents and not kids. Of course, if the children see the parents and siblings doing this crazy thing called a selfie, this might show them that it can easily be too much of a good thing.
Cornell’s signature style of illustrations is the first thing you see. The crazy and fun colors and the quirky attributes of her people are obviously hers. They cover the pages happily. I am not sure if this family has popped up in other books, but here they are a biracial couple who just enjoy being mom and dad to a couple of kids. There nothing to say if this is a blended family, adoption was the result or whatnot. It is just a family dealing with the selfie-crisis of Mom!
The text is slightly dated, as in a few years we will find a new way to take selfies, but reading and family time will never go out of style.
