A Farm for Maisie is the third title in the Sweet Pea & Friends series. These books by John and Jennifer Churchman tell the story of their farm and the animals that live there. Each story is told from the viewpoint of the animals. Their humanistic thoughts, feelings and fears come together within the text and photographs.
The first, Sweet Pea & Friends is The Sheepover. It was a big hit at my bookstore. The customers like the sweet, fanciful story of animals and what they overcome to find their forever homes on the farm. The second title, Brave Little Finn, I am unaware of its popularity, but it continues the farm and the animal friend’s adventures, therefore, is a must for the fan of the series. Some characters are repeated or mentioned from the book before, however, each is its own stand-alone title. A fourth title, Alpaca Lunch will be out in July 2018 and the fifth, will be out in February of 2019. I am looking forward to The Easter Surprise. And The Sheepover is also available in the board book format.
These books are too sweet for my tastes, but I know a dozen people off the top of my head who will love them. However, I do love the photographs. They are sweet, but being photographs (and therefore “real”) they have a certain charm I enjoy. They show Maisie as she goes from a puppy without a job (or even an idea of what she is supposed to do), to learning she is a sheep-dog and what that means. This is more believable than the first title where the sheep have a sheep (sleep) over.
With that said, these are great gifts for baby shower gifts, first birthdays or for the adult who loves all animals. With Maisie, this is great for the dog lover among us.
