I think this might’ve been a Kindle First? I can’t remember. I do remember (because I just finished it last night) that I liked it though!
This book goes through the classic question of “If you saw something not quite right, would you do something about it?”
A woman (Ella) sees two young girls on a train. Two recently released convicts (she finds out while casually listening to the conversation) strike up their acquaintance on the train. Ella is alarmed and wants to call someone / report it / do something. Then she hears one of the girls having sex with one of the men in the bathroom on the train. She’s turned off because she thought they were “innocent girls” that needed her help. She goes on with her day and doesn’t do anything.
The next day, one of the girls, Anna (not the bathroom sex one) goes missing. Ella talks to the police, but somehow her name gets out as the witness who didn’t do anything, and she starts getting harassed. The girl is not found, and the bathroom sex friend (Sarah) says Ella’s a liar.
Fast forward one year. It’s almost the anniversary of Anna’s disappearance. Ella starts getting creepy postcards about how she didn’t do anything. Then she starts getting creepier ones about how someone is watching her.
This is one of those books told from multiple points of view. We hear from Ella, Sarah, Anna’s father, and the PI that Ella hired to figure out who’s stalking her. Each and every character is well developed, and not a caricature. It would have been so easy for the author to make Sarah the unrepentant slut (slag since we’re in England), Ella the drunken and unreliable witness, and the PI sleazy. I’d read anything else written by Teresa Driscoll!
