Ok so let’s just get this out of the way. I read R.L. Stine books when I was younger, but I quickly outgrew them and moved on to Christopher Pike books. He was a little bit more advanced than R.L. Stine. Still – Stine was a big early influence on my enjoyment of horror / scary books. So, I had high hopes for this “adult” story.
It wasn’t bad. It was absolutely a page turner, and I love that in a book. It just could’ve been better. As I was reading, I was remembering why I switched to Christopher Pike so early on in my youth. Lots of chapters ended with mini cliffhangers. I remember that from the Goosebumps and Fear Street books. It’s not a huge deal, but it’s definitely a cheap way to build suspense.
I thought the premise of this book was interesting. A travel blogger goes to a small island right before a hurricane, survives the hurricane, meets two creepy blonde boys, and brings them home. I am not a “kid person”, so it would never ever ever cross my mind to “rescue” and adopt two creepy little kids. Even two non-creepy kids. Even one kid. Anyway, I digress. Her husband is not cool with the plan, and he tries to talk her out of it, but she brings them home anyway. They’re little blonde twins, so they’re obvs evil as hell. I won’t ruin the story, in case you want a quick read. Let’s just say that mayhem ensues. Like I said above, I wanted this to be better!
