Y’all have been recommending this one forever, and I finally got a copy and read it, and LOVED IT. So thank you all for your excellent taste! The book opens with the line, “Dear You, The body you are wearing used to be mine.” And it just never slows down from there.
“If you want to switch jobs, then you can come over here right now and balance the extermination budget in London while (shuffling through papers) figuring out why the hell a two-door wardrobe in the spare room of a country house is considered to be a matter of national concern!”
Myfanwy (rhymes with Tiffany) Thomas is a Rook, an operative within the Majesty’s “supernatural secret service”. But she only knows that because of a note left in her pocket — a note she wrote herself prior to losing her entire memory. Myfanwy’s job ostensibly deals mostly with paperwork, while the rest of the Checquy runs around dealing with supernatural forces (like a British Men in Black), she has some tricks up her sleeve, too. Only…she doesn’t know about those either.
This book is clever, funny and wonderfully fast-paced. It’s like 500 pages, and I flew through it in 2 nights. I loved the characters and the mystery and the notes Myfanwy leaves herself. That definitely made for a clever way to handle great batches of exposition. I picked the second one up from the library last night, and I can’t wait to drive back in!
