Talking As Fast As I Can by Lauren Graham

January 1, 2017 by Beth Ellen 6 Comments

So I was pretty much the perfect age for Gilmore Girls. I’m almost the same age as fictional Rory, and growing up without cable my options were limited. (I watched Gilmore Girls and West Wing, it was a magical time in my teenage life). Even when I studied abroad in college I got weekly updates of what happened in the episodes from my old roommate so I’d be ready for the new season when I came back (clearly we’re talking pre-digital anything here, and DVD seasons were too expensive for my cheap-arse to buy). Therefore Lauren Graham will forever be special and wonderful and Lorelai Gilmore to me. Hence getting her memoir in audiobook form.

This little memoir is covers most of the bases in Ms. Graham’s life. From growing up to her first acting experiences to Gilmore Girls, Parenthood, and beyond. She also hits on her dating life in LA, particularly Peter Krause, and celebrity and the random stuff that goes with that. It just left me smiling. Ms. Graham was a delight in her narration, and definitely does not take herself too seriously. You get her energy and enthusiasm for all of her projects, and it’s a joy to listen to.

My one complaint, if it’s really a complaint, is that I wanted more. MORE I SAY. Clocking in at around 4.5 hours that means it’s about a 200 page book. That is a novella to me in fiction form. She could have doubled the length and added in every random story imaginable in her life, and I’d be just as entertained.
Anywho, if you’re a Lauren Graham or a Lorelai Gilmore fan this a must-read be it in book or audio form. What a great little audiobook to start off 2017 with!

I’m so glad this is getting good reviews. I had much the same experience with you. I was Rory’s exact age (I guess I still am?) so her life has been this weird echo of mine. But I always loved GG for Lorelai. I’ll probably get to this sometime this year, and definitely in audio.

I outgrew Rory pretty quickly, even while watching initially, but Lorelai and Emily are the reasons I rewatch it every year to two. They are some of my favorite female characters out there.

Yes, Emily! And I appreciate her more as I get older.
