I wasn’t particularly interested in this one when it first came out. I’ve only ever really seen Aziz on Parks&Rec, and I’m not a stand up comedy kind of gal usually so I didn’t know almost anything about his comedy. When I discovered, reading reviews of my fellow lovely Ballers, that is was actually a sociology book with some humor mixed in I was way more on board.
Modern Romance came about from Aziz being curious about how people are finding each other in our modern times. He first started to include it in his stand up acts, but with time because more interested and hooked up with sociologist Eric Klinenberg. Together they ran focus groups, talked to eminent folks studying the field, and read a lot of research papers. They aren’t trying to state any major facts, but instead are mostly just commenting on the way we live now.
It was interesting. I was in turn amused, intrigued, thoughtful, etc. My favorite part was learning about the different dating environments around the world. It’s so varied country to country even with modern technology so I enjoyed learning more. They clearly put a lot of effort in, and I appreciated it. It mostly made me quite glad I found Mr. Beth Ellen when I did. I was not ready for a tinder filled world. Dating today sounds even scarier than a few years ago, so I say to all go forth and good luck. May your swipe rights give you what you are looking for. (Is that the right direction? I still don’t know, and I’d like to keep it that way).
