Hooked From the Start

Where No Shadow Stays by Sara Hashem

April 28, 2026 by Tracy Leave a Comment

I’m not really a horror reader, but I loved Sara Hashem’s Scorched Throne duology so much that I decided I had to give this one a try. And I’m so glad I took the chance because it was great! I was hooked from the opening line: “No one has tried to kill me yet today.” So narrates main character Mina, an Egyptian American high school senior who recently returned from a visit to Egypt. Something dark came back with her, and whenever she is alone with someone, […]

Creepy yet unsatisfying jaunt into a Japanese underworld with games.

Find Him Where You Left Him Dead by Kristen Simmons

November 17, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ARC. It hasn’t affected the contents of my review. I liked this, but there are some pretty significant things keeping me from giving this any higher than three stars. The biggest problem being that several of the twisty details and reveals make no sense, and we get no explanations for them. Some of this I guess I can write off if it turns out this will be a series [note: yes, it will be a series, it […]

This YA horror was more disturbing to me than some adult horror books I’ve read.

The Taking of Jake Livingston by Ryan Douglass

December 23, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

It’s nearly always a good thing when one of your only complaints about a book is “I wanted more”. I say nearly, because I have read some stinkers where the main thing wrong was that the author didn’t actually do the work of fleshing out the world and the characters. Here, that’s not the problem. It’s pretty clear from reading this that the author did his work. It’s a concise YA horror story about a young man who can see ghosts (among other abilities), and […]

An intense and timely YA thriller.

Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé

July 26, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

I’ve decided to keep this rounded down to four stars for now, because while the rest of the book was absolutely great, the climax was a little underwhelming for me, and that’s the moment you’re waiting for in a thriller. The epilogue ended the book on a great note, but this wasn’t a perfect read. It was very, very good, though, and I will definitely be checking out everything from this author going forward. If this is the book she can write at 21 years […]

I Promise I Tried With This One

July 7, 2016 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

Sometimes, a book shows up and you read it knowing full well it isn’t for you. This, friends, is one of those books. I’m participating in Book Riot’s Read Harder Challenge again this year since I’m usually looking for an excuse to read something different and I have been trying to expand my tastes. One of the challenges, number one in fact, is to read a horror book. Fear was struck into my heart because I don’t even watch horror movies, let alone read horror […]
