These two books contrast very well in terms of how to do historical research and writing well versus how to do it lazily and sloppily. I attended graduate school at the Naval Postgraduate School, run by the U.S. Navy. This book was recommended by everyone I met there.  One of the authors, P.W. First published in 1960, A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr. is considered a somewhat of a classic of post-apocalyptic science fiction.
