“Go then, there are other worlds than these.

The Gunslinger (The Dark Tower, #1) by Stephen King

June 21, 2024 by narfna Leave a Comment

I rated this four stars the first time I read it. I think that was because I hadn’t read the rest of the series yet, and now that I have in my head what this series can really do when it’s going, this one just feels a little anemic in comparison. Also, it’s such a weird book that I didn’t know what to make of it at the time, but I can see what he’s doing now that I’ve read the rest of it. In […]

His quarry had burned the devil-grass, of course.

The Gunslinger by Stephen King

I mean I guess I just decided to reread The Dark Tower. I’ve read the whole thing once, but this is probably my 4th or 5th time through The Gunslinger and I’ve read The Drawing of the Three twice before. So what’s interesting this time around is knowing where I’m headed, which is kind of ironic about rereading all things considered (sneaky spoiler joke). But what strikes me about this time through is how much richer this book is than how I remembered it, given […]

And So it Begins #CBRBingo

August 1, 2018 by Caitlin_D 3 Comments

July is incredibly tough month for me at work, in a good way, so I haven’t been reading as much as I do the rest of the year. Most of my reading the last three weeks has been audiobooks on my commute and when I had a few moments to unwind at home I chose television over writing reviews. When I saw the first post about Cannonball Bingo I got excited because now it looks like I saved my backlog of reviews for the contest […]

They were close to the end of the beginning…

I know, I should shut up already about how many times I’ve read this Stephen King book or that Stephen King book. But really, I’ve read this book a lot. I think even more than The Stand. I read it when it was a standalone book (and I had to brave crossing the floor of the Newton Highlands public library — from the children’s section to the adult section), and this was before Uncle Stevie tinkered with it to make it fit better into the world of the […]

What a weird, dark little book.

December 21, 2016 by narfna 18 Comments

So maybe you’ve heard this old story about how to boil a frog. You dump a frog in boiling water, he’s going to jump right out. You put cool water in the pot with lil froggie and slowly heat it up while he’s inside? Maybe he won’t sit there and boil to death. He’ll jump out eventually if things get too hot. But he’s gonna stay in there a good long while if you play your cards right. It’s a useful little anecdote; can be […]
