KORRA IS BACK AND I AM ALL CAPS EXCITED ABOUT IT.

October 23, 2017 by narfna 4 Comments

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I miss Legend of Korra so freaking much. Every couple of years, I get this insatiable urge to rewatch Avatar: The Last Airbender, and ever since Korra ended in 2014, I’ve folded them in together as one big rewatch. I find them both so lovely and comforting and fun and beautiful. I’ve also been reading Gene Luen Yang’s official comics continuations of Aang and the gang, and really enjoying them, so you bet your ass when […]

Good for Gilmore Girls Fans

March 6, 2017 by ASKReviews 7 Comments

Best for: Fans of Lauren Graham, fans of Gilmore Girls. If you’re just a fan of her work on Parenthood, there’s only one chapter in here for you. In a nutshell: A loosely chronological collection of essays by Lauren Graham, discussing how she got into acting, her time on Gilmore Girls, and her time filming the recent series of films for Netflix. Line that sticks with me: “What was it I’d encountered that day, and those other times? Why would anyone assume I’d need help […]

An appeal to Americans to shake off the chains of economic injustice and complacency

March 2, 2015 by Valyruh 2 Comments

This non-fiction contribution by the highly-respected African-American author addressing some of the many problems afflicting the United States today is a must-read. Written in 2000 in a presidential election year (but today more timely than ever), the socially-conscious Mosely intended his book-length essay to awaken the majority of Americans—black and white—who go through life too easily content to wear what he calls the chains of economic oppression, cultural ignorance and racial prejudice. Thus the title of his discourse.   Moseley says that while it is […]

It might involve ponies.

Mr. Kiss and Tell is the second of two books contracted after the Kickstarted movie in 2014. Both books have done a great job taking the Veronica Mars world, escalating it, and translating it to the medium of books. I also really like what they’re doing with Veronica’s character (and the other characters). They’re allowing them to grow and change. These characters haven’t just been held in stasis in the nine years that have elapsed since the third season of the TV show ended. This […]

The Guy Who Made Farrah (and Countess Others) A Star

October 22, 2014 by xoxoxoe Leave a Comment

Anyone who has ever considered a job in show business — whether in front of or behind the camera – should read Starmaker: Life as a Hollywood Publicist with Farrah, the Rat Pack and 600 More Stars Who Fired Me. Most people may not be familiar with its subject, Hollywood publicist, agent, producer Jay Bernstein, but they will undoubtedly be more than familiar with his stellar client list, which includes the biggest stars of the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s. Stars such as Frank Sinatra, Sammy […]

Annoy, tiny blonde one, annoy like the wind!

June 9, 2014 by narfna 7 Comments

For five years, May 17th was an actual day of mourning for me. I put it on my calendar and wore all black. May 17th, 2007 was the day the CW canceled Veronica Mars. This five year period ended for me on March 13th, 2013 — O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! — when Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell announced they were Kickstarting the return of V-Mars, one of my favorite television heroines of all time. My love for her transcends my ability to think critically. I backed the project […]
