Not the book I was expecting…

The Luminaries by Susan Dennard

January 23, 2025 by NatalieH 1 Comment

A few years ago, I watched a TV show called The Luminaries. I remember liking it, but don’t remember a ton about it, other than it was set in 19th century New Zealand and had Eva Green being all mysterious and witchy. I also knew it was based on a book, and, before I started reading it, believed that it was based on this book, The Luminaries, by Susan Dennard. However, shortly after starting, and noticing that it was set in modern-day America, realized that […]

I liked this upon finishing it five months ago . . .

The Luminaries (The Luminaries, #1) by Susan Dennard

September 7, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

. . . but I have since had almost everything about it fall out of my head. Had I written this review right after finishing like a good little reviewer, it would have been four stars, but I think the fact that it hasn’t stuck with me and I had to look up so much in order to even write this paltry review is definitely working against the book, and I’ve bumped it down to 3.5 stars, rounded down, as a result. Also I remembered […]

Classic second book syndrome.

March 18, 2017 by narfna 3 Comments

Man, last year when I read the first book in this series, I read it so fast and got so super into it. I was expecting something similar to happen when I picked up book two several weeks ago, but my experience was pretty much the exact opposite. I read the first one in practically one sitting over the course of one day. This one took me weeks to finish, and I had to force myself to pick it up. While reading, I enjoyed myself, but […]

These Dead Run

February 22, 2017 by Lane 1 Comment

I did not like this book at first, and I almost gave up on it. This is by the same author that wrote Truthwitch, which I did not like as much as other people seemed to. I kept at this book, mostly because I was sitting by the pool and had not brought another book. Around page 50 things picked up and I ended up staying up way too late that night finishing it. Eleanor Fitt’s brother is missing and the Dead are walking. Apparently […]

A YA fantasy centering on a strong female friendship.

So on reflection this is probably one of those books that is a four star Ashley book, but maybe not a four star Everybody Else book. I’m just super susceptible to this kind of shit–shit the author described on her Reddit AMA as “Avatar: The Last Airbender meets Sabriel.” I mean, could you dangle that bone in front of a more willing target? I don’t think so. While I’m not sure I quite get the connection to Sabriel, the A:TLA inspiration is clear. Truthwitch is […]
