I did not like this book at first, and I almost gave up on it. This is by the same author that wrote Truthwitch, which I did not like as much as other people seemed to. I kept at this book, mostly because I was sitting by the pool and had not brought another book. Around page 50 things picked up and I ended up staying up way too late that night finishing it.
Eleanor Fitt’s brother is missing and the Dead are walking. Apparently a zombie or two is par for the course and no one bothers too much about it, but a necromancer is in town making whole cemeteries rise up and do his bidding. On top of these problems Eleanor’s mother is basically selling her off to the highest bidder to solve the family’s financial problems.
The book brings together a fun cast of misfits to fight the zombie horde. It is a light, funny book with a nice romantic subplot. The truth of everything is easy to suss out, but it is still enjoyable to follow Eleanor as she puts the pieces together and fights against societal expectation. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series and watching Eleanor become stronger and more independent.
