How High We Go in the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu

In 2020, when many of us began working from home, I started listening to a podcast series called The Happiness Lab. The creators had produced a string of episodes dedicated to coping with the pandemic, and one episode in particular stuck with me. The theme was that, at some point, we would come out on the other side of our current global challenge, and one way to get through it was to think about what kind of story we want to be able to tell […]

Thought provoking stories

How High We Go In The Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu

How High We Go In the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu is a novel that depicts a global pandemic that is unleashed when an ancient virus is released from permafrost that is melting due to climate change. Most descriptions of this book that I’ve seen note that the novel had been mostly written before our current pandemic arose, and I feel somewhat compelled to say that as well. The novel wasn’t inspired by the Covid pandemic, but reading this book very much made me grapple with […]

Grief and Hope – the human experience

How High We Go in the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu

BINGO – New This is going to be a difficult book to summarize because I would not consider it a novel. It’s closer to a collection of short stories, but that’s not quite right either. It’s something in between. There’s a long form improv format in which the audience sees a scene with Person A and Person B. Something in that scene sparks an idea for a scene tangentially connected between Person B and Person C. Then a connected scene between Person C and D, […]
