I read Fan Girl a year or so ago and while it didn’t rock my world like Eleanor and Park, I enjoyed it and I remember finding the fan fiction that the main character wrote kind of interesting—in a Harry Potter meets . . . well, fan fiction kind of way. By the way, if you haven’t read Fan Girl, there are spoilers ahead about the two main characters so “carry on” at your own risk. Rainbow Rowell found the dueling teen wizards that her […]
My introduction to Rainbow Rowell
I wasn’t intending to review this book, but two weeks after I’ve read it bits of it are still ruminating around in my head. First, thank you to Faintingviolet for sending me a copy. I really did enjoy the book, it’s just a really sweet little novella. The plot is pretty simple. Elena decides she’s going to fully participate in Geek Culture and wait in line for the latest Star Wars movie. When she gets there she find that, oops, there are only two other […]
The Line Awakens
For World Book Day, Rainbow Rowell wrote this charming short story about a high school senior, Elena, and her experience waiting in line for the newest Star Wars theatrical release. My dad introduced the original Star Wars trilogy to my sister & me when we were young; I saw Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones in theaters when I was in middle school before my interest fizzled out. My husband, however, is a huge nerd who loves Star Wars whose excitement is contagious- we […]
Thank you faintingviolet!!
How freaking short was this book? I’ll tell you — too freaking short! It’s quintessential Rainbow Rowell, but so sadly little of it. Covering three days in line to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Kindred Spirits is a lovely meditation on geekdom, “nerd culture,” and the unfortunately antagonistic relationship that can arise between men and women in “nerd culture” when people feel ostracized by the mainstream and/or the opposite sex and wrap themselves in the protective cloaks of their interests and similar people with […]
Look at where you are. Look at where you started. The fact that you’re alive is a miracle.
It seems silly to try to summarize this novel. For a couple of reasons. One, because it’s a story that’s based on a fictional character from another fictional novel (meaning it’s a story made up by a character in a made up story). Two, because everyone who is familiar with Rainbow Rowell, and particularly her novel, Fangirl, already knows all about this novel so trying to describe it feels totally unnecessary. Especially given how many words have already been spilled all over the internet about […]
A good dose of the warm and fuzzies
Lincoln has moved back home with his mother after 10 years of drifting through college programs. He takes a job at a newspaper, The Courier, working in IT. He’s there to help minimized the impact of Y2K on the company’s server, but mostly he’s there to enforce the company’s rules about internet and work email usage; he’s to monitor any emails that violate the company’s policy and send warnings to any offenders. This is how Lincoln “meets” Beth and Jennifer, a reporter who now does the […]
