Why Do You Think Anything in that House was ever Yours to Take?

Tear it Down by Nick Petrie

January 28, 2019 by Jenny S Leave a Comment

Two weeks ago, after a long day of pre-semester meetings at my college, I headed to a library in Gurnee (the town next to mine) with my sister to hear Nick Petrie talk with another author, Lori Rader-Day, about his newly released novel, Tear It Down.  The book is the fourth in a series about Peter Ash, a military veteran with a persistent case of PTSD and an uncanny ability to attract trouble. The conversation wandered in many interesting directions, including a discussion of series […]

Thank you, Jenny S!

Came home to a rather heavy package from Amazon last night, and found that Jenny S had sent me My Favorite Thing is Monsters, and just in time! I have this on my list for next week, and was going to get it out of the library. She also sent me The Drifter, which I’ve never heard of before but will definitely be reading now, and some Mexican hot chocolate, for her family’s tradition of Jólabókaflóðið. (I make all my hot chocolate Mexican anyway, so this […]

Damm, now I’m caught up!

September 3, 2018 by Jenny S Leave a Comment

There’s something wonderful about discovering a new series and having the books you haven’t read yet beckoning to you from a future snow day or vacation, creating a nice bit of anticipation that you’re hesitant to lose.  You may have finished with the first adventure but the story goes on.  Much like binge watching a good TV show on Netflix or Amazon (Travelers and Jack Ryan, I’m talking about you!), you both want to consume faster and slow down. This is how I felt as […]

Buying Dave Robicheaux Another Round

August 6, 2018 by Jenny S Leave a Comment

I read Nick Petrie’s debut novel about Peter Ash, The Drifter, a few months ago and really liked it.  It was a well-plotted noir novel set in Milwaukee and though many critics have compared Peter Ash, an Iraq War vet who also has a penchant for wandering, to Jack Reacher, I thought the similarity was superficial at best.  ReadingThe Drifter and getting sucked into Ash’s struggles with PTSD and the guilt he feels over a fellow soldier’s suicide made me realize what was missing from Lee […]

I really enjoyed this one. I was particularly amused at Lady Catherine deBoutgh’s disgust at her assassin’s incompetence.
