This book is bubblier and more playful than the cover would indicate.

The Neighbor's Secret by L. Alison Heller

January 24, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

I liked this, but except for two elements that set it apart, this is kind of just a Big Little Lies clone. So, this three stars is a more positive three stars. I really did like the experience of reading this book. The writing is very playful, and the characters have depth to them. There’s also a satirical edge to some of the goings-on, like the neighborhood book club meetings the novel revolves around, which each feature, excepting Lolita, what I’m pretty sure is a […]

Enjoyable read, in spite of being the weakest in the series

A Line to Kill by Anthony Horowitz

January 22, 2022 by KimMiE" 1 Comment

Ever since I discovered Anthony Horowitz in 2019, I’ve been catching up on his previously released novels and eagerly awaiting new ones. I was, therefore, delighted to see A Line to Kill, book #3 in Horowitz’s Hawthorne series, gracing bookstore shelves while I was out Christmas shopping last month. I marched up to my husband and announced, “I’m buying this for my dad, but I would also like to add it to my Christmas list.” Because I have a husband who picks up on these types […]

Don’t Let Them Eat Cake!

Arya Winters and the Tiramisu of Death by Amita Bryant

January 16, 2022 by Jake Leave a Comment

Have been trying to get my hands on this one for a while, ever since reading Amita Murray’s piece on the need for sex in cozy mysteries (I completely agree!). While I enjoyed the book itself, I’m glad I didn’t pay for it. This is one that barely clears the 4-star threshold. I appreciate what Amita Murray is trying to do: give a refreshing, sexy take on cozy mysteries with a lead that’s younger and more misanthropic than your average blue haired Miss Marple. I […]

The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward

January 15, 2022 by ifso 3 Comments

I originally saw this book recommended on r/horrorlit a couple of months ago, when I was trying to branch out into different genres.  I’m not sure I’d really classify this as horror – psychological fiction might be more apt. It’s better to go into this book with as little information on the plot as possible, so I’ll do my best to keep this review spoiler-free. The basic plot set up: Years ago, a little girl went missing. Her sister is looking for the person responsible, […]

My first Lisa Jewell, and it will not be my last!

The Night She Disappeared by Lisa Jewell

January 13, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

This was really good! Part of me wanted to give it my first five star rating of 2022, but I’m holding out for true love on that one. This was very close, though. I think the only thing stopping me is that I was missing some of that elation that comes from being truly surprised by a book, because I did figure out several key elements/twists on my own before the book revealed them to me. What remains, though, is a very solid, extremely engaging […]

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

January 8, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

The Inheritance Games is basically Knives Out meets The Westing Game with a touch of any standard YA romance. The heroine Avery comes from a poor background with a good bit of family disfunction, but she plans to get out of that by going to college for actuarial science. These plans are interrupted when she finds out that she’s been named heiress to a massive fortune left to her by Tobias Hawthorne, whom she’s never heard of. To get the billions, all she has to […]
