It’s Two Mysteries In One

Moonflower Murders by Anthony Horowitz

August 29, 2020 by jomidi 3 Comments

Double your pleasure, double your fun, with two mysteries in one! Anthony Horowitz has done it again.  Following up his Magpie Murders, with the sequel Moonflower Murders.  Moonflower Murders, is once again a book within a book.  The “outer” book follows publisher Susan Ryeland as she is hired to solve a murder which occurred eight years ago at a hotel and my be tied to a hotel employee who has just gone missing.  The ‘inner” book, was written by Susan’s former writer, the late Alan […]

This was . . . weird.

Little Face (Spilling CID, #1) by Sophie Hannah

August 26, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

Well, this was an experience. Disappointing, kind of bonkers, somehow still readable, lots of plot holes. It felt good to clean it off my TBR, and I’ll probably continue the series just because I’m curious about the bizarre relationship between the two detectives, but boy was it not what I was expecting. The premise of this book is a good one, one that I don’t think it really delivers on: a woman leaves her house for the first time since her two week old baby […]

“That was the thing about lies: they demanded commitment.”

Miracle Creek by Angie Kim

August 25, 2020 by narfna 2 Comments

I really liked this. I didn’t want to read it for the longest time, because I thought it was lit-fic (and it sort of was), but when I heard it was a courtroom drama/mystery, I immediately bought it. The premise also sounded like something pretty unique, and I wanted to see what the author could do with it. The Yoo family are immigrants from Korea, and run a business called Miracle Submarine in the small town of Miracle Creek. The sub in question is actually […]

A Murderous Relation by Deanna Raybourn

August 22, 2020 by Leedock 5 Comments

CBR12 BINGO: Red I am already worried about the day when Raybourn stops writing these Veronica Speedwell mysteries. Truly. These books and Sherry Thomas’ Lady Sherlock series are what fill the little hole in my heart that Gail Carriger left when the Parasols and Protectorate series ended. I need my witty banter laced with sexual tension. I yearn for characters with quirky occupations, impeccable fashion sense and taste for tea and sweets. Give me passages like this and I am satisified: “Veronica,” he said flatly, ” I am not going […]

Psycho Killer…Q’est que ce?

The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris

August 21, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

The other night, I watched The Silence of the Lambs and became confident that it’s one of my all-time favorite movies. However, it got me thinking about the book. It’s been years since I read it and I could only vaguely recall the differences between the two. So after I was done, I decided to check it out for the first time in a long time. It’s a good book, at times very good, but perhaps not a great one. Harris’ great creation: the menacing Dr. […]

Honky Tonk

The Fallen by Ace Atkins

August 17, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

I’ve accepted the fact that Ace Atkins is basically going to write the same book each time with the Quinn Colson series. Over-their-head gangsters with connections to Tibbehah. People swooping in from Quinn’s past. A bunch of random references to vaginas. Some dirty dealing Mississippi pols and crooks. And overall, mostly fun southern fried crime stories. I don’t know if I would have gorged on this series so hard had it not been for quarantine. But I’m glad I am. They’re enjoyable. Atkins knows how […]
