Where is my mind?

February 27, 2016 by maydays 3 Comments

Look at me, trying new things!  Based on a great review from ChainedVase https://cannonballread.com/2016/02/sci-fic-mystery-yes-please/, I went a bit outside of my rut and tried some sci-fi.  What a great read! In Scalzi’s very creative and fleshed-out world a widespread virus has resulted in millions of people being struck with Haden’s Syndrome, named for the first lady who was one of the early public victims.  Haden’s sufferers (called Hadens) are “locked in” to their bodies with full mental capacity and no voluntary nervous system.  Due to years of […]

Cupcakes, Some False Advertising, and A Heap of Nonsense

February 20, 2016 by maydays 11 Comments

I’m new to CBR this year, and you all seem to really like your romances.  Outside of the classics and a few mainstreams, I have yet to get the genre to really speak to me.  I’m pretty pragmatic by nature, so I’m not easily swept away.  My dislike for romance makes me feel like there’s something wrong with me, not that there’s something wrong with romances.  So I try and try again. So, here we are.  Again.  Someone (I’m sorry I can’t remember who), mentioned […]

A River Runs Through It…..My Latest Book Club WWII HistFic

February 16, 2016 by maydays Leave a Comment

This is my book club’s choice for this month.  We’ve done plenty of WWII historical fiction, but none quite this epic…it spans 1915-1952 in the town of Burgdorf, Germany. Trudi Montag is a Zwerg (dwarf) woman living in Burgdorf with her father Leo who owns the pay-library.  At the start of the novel, Trudi is 4 years old and newly realizing that her stature sets her apart and makes her undesirably “outsider”.  Trudi also discovers that she is a natural storyteller, and her position in the […]

Against All Odds

January 24, 2016 by maydays Leave a Comment

Still Missing chronicles Annie’s horrific abduction and imprisonment by a lunatic she calls The Freak, as told to her “shrink”. Each chapter represents a therapy session, as Annie understandably needs a great deal of help processing her ordeal. It’s clear from the very beginning that Annie’s case has generated 24-hour news cycle notoriety, though the circumstances of her homecoming are only given to us in pieces during her sessions.  How did Annie get away? Is the cops’ investigation ongoing? Can Annie’s relationship with her boyfriend […]
