We can’t go faster than light but maybe spacetime can!?

The Science of Sci-Fi: From Warp Speed to Interstellar Travel by Erin Macdonald

March 30, 2023 by Halbs Leave a Comment

This year is my “No-Buy Year,” so I’m trying (and mostly succeeding!) to cut way back on buying books in any form. I already have so many that I haven’t read! So right now I’m going through a backlog of Audible books on my now-defunct account. (I switched to Libro.fm last year to support local indie bookstores with my audiobook purchases. Highly recommend!) A benefit of the No-Buy Year is rediscovering the myriad things you previously thought highly enough of to purchase, but then shortly […]

Mass Effect and Mando? Shiny!

Those Left Behind by N. C. Scrimgeour

June 1, 2022 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Those Left Behind is the first book in N. C. Scrimgeour’s “Waystations trilogy.” The first two books are available in paperback and on Kindle Unlimited if that’s your jam. I was scrolling through TikTok the other night, trying to ignore the impending doom of our planet and my own cold dead heart, when author N.C. Scrimgeour’s account popped up. “Do you like Mass Effect and The Mandalorian?” the video asked. Of course I do! I promptly added the Waystations trilogy to my To Read shelf, […]

I LOVE SPACE

February 26, 2017 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Here is how much I love space: When I die, I want my casket to be launched into the sun. Earlier this week I was sitting on the couch, tending my whiskey and watching The Expanse. Mrs. Halbs asked me why I love space so much. “Look at it! That’s where God is,” I said. Maybe that’s it. I love the majesty and wonder and awe of the cosmos. How something can be so grand and lonely and beautiful and mysterious – I like thinking about that. So, […]

Mass Effect: Redemption

January 8, 2014 by Vylotte Leave a Comment

Set between the prologue and start of Mass Effect 2, the novel introduces some familiar faces in a race to find Shepherd’s body before the Collectors escape with it. Written by ME2 lead writer Mac Walters, it is true to the universe and characters, though a very superficial cast. I was surprised to see Miranda and Liara working together for the Illusive man, which explains their prickly reunion in the game proper. And here I thought it was just because I had romanced both of […]
