The Color Black and Erased Memory

The Ancient Magus Bride Wizard's Blue vol. 8 by Makoto Sanda, Isuo Tsukumo, Kore Yamazaki

May 18, 2024 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Is it weird that it’s sometimes uncomfortable reading in front of someone? As in, it almost feels like an invasion of privacy. Long story short, I’m hosting a family member temporarily out of their home for major water damage repair, and it’s been kind of hard to do extended reading time; that and it’s been crazy-time at work but that part’s better now. Anyways, both of those are why I’ve been going back to graphic novels and manga a bit more than usual lately (still […]

Review #8: Manga?!

The Ancient Magus' Bride by Kore Yamazaki

December 29, 2023 by Monty Leave a Comment

I don’t normally read manga or watch anime (other than Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, which I would recommend to literally anyone). I had heard of The Ancient Magus’ Bride manga by Kore Yamazaki and it’s anime adaptation, thought the premise was deeply weird, and wanted to see if that was truly the case. I was also sick, and willing to read something far outside my comfort zone in order to distract from that. Wikipedia description: “Having been ostracized by both her relatives and partially by society, […]

Body Shifting, Acceptance, and Change to Save a Friend

The Ancient Magus' Bride vol. 17 by Kore Yamazaki

July 27, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 7: Bodies, Bodies In The Ancient Magus’ Bride (volume 17), there are quite a few bodies, many of them unusual, unique, and/or not original for their inhabitants. Given that many of the bodies belong to teenagers (roughly high school age), it’s sort of fitting there’s going to be a lot of change and confusion. First, Chise (MC’s) classmates: Philomela has been infected by a nasty powerful ancient magic book and transformed into some kind of briar demon thing, but Chise still sees her classmate […]

Who Wears the Black Hat could be a Good Mystery to Solve

Jack Flash and the Faerie Case Files, volume 3 by Yu Godai, Mako Oikawa, Kore Yamazaki

October 17, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Now that we’re firmly in original story territory, Jack Flash and the Faerie Case Files volume 3 spends a lot of time setting up what could be a really interesting suspenseful adventure. There is a mysterious man in a black hat who seems to be involved in pushing a drug allowing humans to temporarily see magic and its users might be trying to herd or lure Jack and Larry into tracking him through a series of crimes connected by this drug. While the man himself […]

A Japanese Girl in a Celtic World

The Ancient Magus Bride vol. 14 by Kore Yamazaki

July 31, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 9: Mythic The Ancient Magus Bride is a manga and anime series based primarily in Celtic mythology, although it contains references to other folklore as well. One of the key characters (the magus of the title) is Elias who is some kind of Fae creature, given that he’s claimed as such by Titania and Oberon (this happens early in the series), the dragons who show up are European in appearance, Silky is a brownie who used to be a banshee, there are some sídhe, […]

The Alchemy Side Might Be Interesting

The Ancient Magus Bride: Wizard's Blue vol. 2 by Makoto Sanda, Isuo Tsukumo, Kore Yamazaki

June 6, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’m probably back to graphic novels for a bit both because I’m getting a little behind with a few series I follow, and I’ve got some stress going on both at work and elsewhere for the next week or so. Nothing serious, but lightening the reading sometimes helps ease the unease. So, I picked up Wizard’s Blue vol. 2 off my TBR shelf; it’s been there a while and I was hoping it might be not too dark; thankfully it wasn’t. It’s not all sunshine […]
