I Don’t Like Time Travel As a Solution

Human Rites by Juno Dawson

Rating: 3 Stars In a nutshell: In this conclusion to the HMRC trilogy, the witches of the UK coven come together to fight a few different forms of the devil. Best for: Fans of the series. Fans of books about modern witches. People who don’t mind a bit of time travel as clean-up to resolve plot lines. Quote that made me think: N/A Why I chose it: I’d read and somewhat enjoyed the previous two books. (Book 1 Review) (Book 2 Review) Review: There is […]

Queen B by Juno Dawson

Best for: Those who are already invested in the HMRC (Her Majesty’s Royal Coven) series. In a nutshell: An alternative telling of exactly how and why Anne Boleyn ascended to the throne and then was summarily removed. Worth quoting: N/A (Audio Book) Why I chose it: Audible recommended this to me as I’d already read The Shadow Cabinet this year. Review: We start with the execution of Queen Anne Boleyn, then jump back and forth between the events years prior to her marrying King Henry […]

Best for: Those who enjoyed the first book in the series, Her Majesty’s Royal Coven. In a nutshell: Taking place immediately after the end of the first book, we find a witch who has taken over her sister’s body and a lot of men who want to cause a lot of harm to women. Worth quoting: N/A Why I chose it: I enjoyed the first in the series. Review: Without spoiling the book, I appreciate that the first one had a theme that was related […]

From the official plot description: At the dawn of their adolescence, on the eve of the summer solstice, four young girls–Helena, Leonie, Niamh, and Elle–took the oath to join Her Majesty’s Royal Coven, established by Queen Elizabeth I as a covert government department. Now, decades later, the witch community is still reeling from a civil war and Helena is now the reigning High Priestess of the organization. Yet Helena is the only one of her friend group still enmeshed in the stale bureaucracy of HMRC. […]

Been putting off this review since July, because sometimes you just like a book too much. I am right about this! Also I’m just really impressed by this book, and I wanted to make sure I did it justice, which is just way too much pressure for a book review. Can’t handle that, procrastination is the solution. It’s so rare for a second book in a series to get better, but this one does. It continued with everything I loved from the first book, got […]

Intersectional Witchy Fiction

Her Majesty’s Royal Coven by Juno Dawson

Best for: People looking for magical worlds set in contemporary time, without supporting, say, anti-trans authors. In a nutshell: Witches are real, and there is a prophesy that a newly discovered teen, Theo, might bring about something very, very bad. A group of friends who were young witches together and have now followed different paths all become involved in addressing this. Worth quoting: N/A Why I chose it: I believe this was the last book I received before I ended a book subscription. What it […]
