I’ve upped my nerd cred.

Star Wars: A New Dawn by John Jackson Miller

January 10, 2021 by Bea Pants 1 Comment

This is the first Star Wars novel that I’ve read which is surprising considering I grew up with the franchise and played the table top RPG. I can’t say I loved this book but I would definitely read another novelization if it sounded interesting. I believe I first heard of this one on a list of the quintessential Star Wars novels and I don’t particularly agree. It has issues with pacing and the plot is more complicated that it strictly needs to be, but it’s […]

I intended to read all the Star Trek books….and made it through 12 of my planned 46

September 21, 2018 by ingres77 2 Comments

I’ve been a fan of Star Trek since I was a child. The Original Series and the Next Generation were TV staples in my house; I devoured every episode, and watched them numerous times. My enjoyment continued into Deep Space 9, but died with Voyager and Enterprise, before being renewed again with the advent of Netflix, which allowed me to re-watch every episode from every series in the correct order (though, I still think Voyager and Enterprise are fairly weak shows). But until last year, […]

Getting to know some new authors in a familiar setting

March 31, 2018 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

There won’t be any spoilers for Star Wars in this review.  This book also contains no spoilers for the movies.   Canto Bight is a new location to the Star Wars universe.  It is a planet that is relevant only because on it rests the city of Canto Bight.  Canto Bight, the place, is Las Vegas and Dubai but more extravagant.  Canto Bight, the book, is a collection of short stories follows a several minor characters, heretofore unknown to the greater Star Wars universe. So, […]

What Obi-Wan Did

February 16, 2016 by Walking Widdershins 3 Comments

Before I begin the review, I should probably confess something. I’m a total Star Wars nut. Have been since I was a youngling. As a wee Gen X’er, I knew Alec Guinness as the wise older Obi-Wan. As a grownup, I was amused by the younger, funner, funnier Obi-Wan of Ewan McGregor. Even if the poor guy was saddled with that horrible Anakin kid. The Obi-Wan of this book is clearly the Ewan McGregor version, as evidenced by the cover shot, as well as the […]

Star Wars Rebels Origin Story: Yes, I watch cartoons.

August 27, 2015 by Walking Widdershins 1 Comment

I think I’m getting geekier as I get older. I caught it from my kid. He’s just getting into Star Wars (and Marvel stuff), and he came to it by way of cartoons on Disney XD. For anyone who hasn’t seen it, “Star Wars Rebels” is an animated series, which is about to start its second season. The show takes place between Episodes 3 and 4 – the Empire is in charge, the Jedi are underground, and no one is happy. On the show, there […]
