Up to date on all my review and managed a bingo blackout *does little dance*

The Stand-Up Groomsman by Jackie Lau

November 14, 2022 by Malin 4 Comments

CBR14 Bingo: Funky (Mel makes Vivian feel very funky, in the bad way, when criticising her career choices when they first meet. There is later a lot of *funky bass line* when they finally get together). This was an ARC given to me by the author. It has not affected the contents of my review. Vivian Liao used to be a huge fan of comedian Melvin “Mel” Lee, and one of her hobbies was making fan art about him. Then she actually had a chance […]

A Series Ender that Gave Me Better than I Expected

Ship Wrecked by Olivia Dade

November 9, 2022 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

I am unsure how to review this book. I loved it. I knew I was going to love it. I am enthralled with the choices Olivia Dade makes with her main characters throughout this three book series (this being the finale following Spoiler Alert and All the Feels). I want everyone to read it and have the same experience that I did. I’m aware that most likely not everyone will as I think there’s a certain kind of lived experience needed to fully grapple with […]

Stoner

New York Dead by Stuart Woods

October 13, 2022 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read as part of CBR14 Bingo: funky. This one is tough. I picked this for “funky” because Woods is descriptive of the fetid scents of Manhattan air. There’s also some funky stuff that happens later in the book, which I won’t spoil. I was able to be clever with my other choices but am tapping out with this one. I’m always on the look out for fun New York tales, especially ones set in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Despite the bad reviews, I was tempted […]

CBR14Bingo – Mind – This book addresses the “heart” elements of poetry with a literary critical mind approach. How to Read a Poem – 5/5 Stars This is a book that I really enjoyed but even Terry Eagleton admits that it’s not much help to anyone who hasn’t read a decent amount of literary criticism, especially for the first half of the book. It’s rare for an author to suggest that maybe for some readers, starting at chapter 5 (out of 7) would yield the […]

“Underneath all the laughs and the gags, it was always about one thing: survival.”

Tanqueray by Stephanie Johnson and Brandon Stanton

July 16, 2022 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Cbr14bingo Funky (I mean, look at photos of this glorious, gorgeous lady. FUNKY!) If you follow Humans of New York on social media, you probably already have some familiarity with Tanqueray/Stephanie Johnson. HONY creator Brandon Stanton featured her on his site a few years ago, and a star was re-born. Given her fascinating life story, flamboyant style, and colorful storytelling, as well as the great popularity of her story on HONY, Stanton felt strongly that he should get Stephanie the book deal she always knew […]
