Rebecca Explains it All (In a Good Way!)

April 28, 2017 by Blingle Bells Leave a Comment

3.5 stars, rounding down because when I think back on it (I finished it a few weeks ago), the things that bugged me stick out more than the things that didn’t. This might’ve been a four star book for me if I’d checked at all on what it actually was. I’d hoped it would be a deeper dive into the title concept, aka “mainsplaining” (although Solnit herself did not coin that term and is not a fan of it). The title essay was fantastic, so […]

A thriller with a very dark theme

April 12, 2017 by Lindzgrl Leave a Comment

This review/book requires a trigger warning: Graphic depictions of sexual assault, rape, domestic violence and stalking   This…is a tough book to recommend to anyone. And yes, you’ll see the high star rating I gave it and wonder how that jives, but my reluctance is purely over the subject matter and not the writing or characters or plot development. The novel follows Catherine Bailey, a British woman who we see alternately in her late twenties and then a few years later (depending on the chapter). […]

Stephen King – even his average efforts are still pretty good

February 2, 2017 by TheShitWizard 5 Comments

According to Goodreads, I’ve read 33 of Stephen King’s books – since getting bitten by the bug through some of his best a few years back, I’ve been slowly working my way through the rest of them. Rose Madder isn’t one of his best, nor is it one of his worst. Instead it’s a decent book, albeit with a harrowing subject matter, that would have been a lot better had it been missing its supernatural elements. Rosie Daniels has spent fourteen years in an abusive […]
