Who knew conclaves were so eventful

Conclave by Robert Harris

Angels and Demons by Dan Brown

Even though I am a big fan of Robert Harris and this is one of his more famous books, I had little desire to read Conclave. The premise just didn’t seem that interesting to me, but I ended up reading it since my family wanted to watch the movie. The whole premise of the book is given to you right in the title since there is nothing particularly unusual about the setup. The pope simply died, and a new one needs to be elected. What […]

Dan Brown Writing Victor Hugo would need a CW

The Watchers by Jon Steele

Bingo 15: Violence The Watchers, had it been better known, would likely have faced bans for the violence, the sex, and the use of religion. I was also a little surprised there was no CW; it kind of needs one given how graphic certain parts of the story get in terms of the sexual and standard violence, some suggested but an awful lot directly shown, especially the last 100 pages or so. Basically, The Watchers is what I image you’d get if Dan Brown had […]

Well, at least I knew what I was getting into.

The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown

I read the prequel to this last year, the unmitigated turd soup called Angles & Demons. I hated the book. The big reveal at the end wasn’t much better than the it was all a dream trope that I tacked on to the end of a short story I wrote in the third grade. Even third grade me realized how trite and predictable it was to pull that out of the hat. Well, Dan Brown returns to tell an equally stupid story about Robert Langdon […]

Looking back on the last two months, and this is all I have to show for it.

Angels and Demons by Dan Brown

I was in college in 2005, studying archaeology and talking to creationists in my free time. The Passion of the Christ had come out the previous year, and I was smart enough to sound like I knew something about the world, but not smart enough to just leave well enough alone. I spent a lot of time talking about religion, and science, and art, and history, and literature. Politics would come later – but I was a college student, and it was the point in […]

I Read Angels & Demons and RUN, YOU FOOLS

Angels & Demons by Dan Brown

First off this is obviously all my fault.  I was warned, I was given an explanation, and nevertheless, I persisted in reading Angels & Demons.  Folks, what can I say: my affection for The Da Vinci Code is pure and genuine, see here.  Angels & Demons, however, is genuinely the best sleep aid on the market. How boring is it?  It’s so boring that despite the fact that this is pretty easy prose, in a small paperback format, I’m barely able to digest 10 pages […]

I Read the Da Vinci Code and You Maybe Should Too?

The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown

Before I begin, know that there is a special place in my heart for not-good movies.  I don’t know if it comes from watching Sunday afternoon disaster films like the Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno with my sister when we were little, but I’d almost prefer to watch a movie I can laugh at than one I laugh with.  It’s just a good time. Perhaps this helps you understand where I’m coming from when I say that I absolutely LOVE the Da Vinci Code […]
