In the year 2025, I’m Team Cozy Murders

Everyone In This Bank Is A Thief by Benjamin Stevenson

The Impossible Fortune by Richard Osman

December 30, 2025 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

I’ll be frank: this year hasn’t been easy.  I’m one of the first people to admit I’m sitting in a super-privileged position, and there are loads of people worse off than Mr Wen and I.  And yet.  It’s a world that’s demanded a certain, self-medicating level of whimsy (and, in some cases, Wimsey) (I’m sorry) in the novels I’m escaping into.  I’ve reread Dorothy Sayers, Margaret Maron, and Penny Reid.  I’ve joined The Best Niece in Australia on the Keeper of the Lost Cities train, […]

Everyone This Christmas Has A Secret by Benjamin Stevenson

Fool Me Twice: Two Twisty Mysteries by Benjamin Stevenson

December 30, 2024 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

I’ve reviewed a couple of Ben Stevenson’s books in the past, and I remain a shameless devotee of his writing.  These two represent the highs and the lows of it, but both remain part of my top twenty books for the year. Fool Me Twice took me back to my childhood.  It can be read from either side – flip the book and start a new story – and is comprised of two novella-length stories. The first story, Find Us, is a pretty creepy kidnapping […]

Bored to Death

Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson

April 8, 2024 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Some murder mysteries are obsessed with darkness, with the depths of depravity the soul can sink to. Others, are more light-hearted affairs. Sure, there’s a dead body or two, but that’s no reason not to sit down for a spot of tea or curl up with a blanket and your pet cat while you work out which of your eccentric neighbors committed the oh-so quaint murder. Benjamin Stevenson’s Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone goes for something a little different. It’s a self-referential, comedic […]

The Devil is in the Detail between these Two Mysteries

Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson

The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels by Janice Hallett

February 11, 2024 by Templeton 4 Comments

I am in the midst of binging some mystery books, and recently read Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone and The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels. I was unfamiliar with these authors and coincidentally read them one after the other. I was pleasantly surprised how complementary they were with each other. Everyone tells the story of a dysfunctional family reunion that quickly turns into multiple murders told from the point of view of one of the family members who happens to be a mystery writer […]

I Hugged This Book When I Finished Reading It

Everyone On This Train is a Suspect by Benjamin Stevenson

December 30, 2023 by thegirlwhogotoverit 1 Comment

This book, like its predecessor, Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone, is a pure delight. Well.  I am so jealous I cannot even bear it that Benjamin Stevenson got to the Ghan first as a murder setting, and presumably got to ride it for both research and promotion.  But other than that delight. [If you are the poor sod who has to read all my last minute reviews, I apologise for using the word “delight” over and over again.  I can swap to “joy” […]

This title totally drew me in!

Ernest Cunningham #1 Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson

October 27, 2023 by kfishgirl 1 Comment

I don’t know how I came across this book, but I really liked it. I listened to the audiobook, which was really fun. We first meet the narrator Ernest, but everyone calls him Ern or Ernie. This immediately endears him to me because I used to have a crazy, mostly deaf dog named Ernie. You can look back at reviews from years ago to see him! Everyone in Ernie’s family (including himself) has killed someone. Sometimes it was an accident, sometimes it wasn’t. Sometimes it […]

Glad to see someone else is meh on this book. Really bored me.
