Oldies But Goodies

Futures to Infinity by Sam Moskowitz, Editor

April 29, 2022 by sabian30 Leave a Comment

On my bookshelf, I have a very battered paperback copy of Futures to Infinity. Written in 1970, I’ve had to tape the cover on, and the pages have gotten pretty brown over the fifty years since it was published. But like comfort food, we have comfort books, and this is one of mine. This book is a collection of short stories by the Greats: Asimov, Heinlein, Bradbury, and others. The fun thing about this collection, aside from being some of the lesser-known works of the […]

Fifties Pulp Science Fiction by the Masters

Isaac Asimov’s Wonderful World of Science Fiction – Intergalactic Empires, Edited by Isaac Asimov, Martin H. Greenburg, and Charles G. Waugh (1983) “We have nine stories by nine authors illustrating nine different versions of Galactic Imperial history…” Isaac Asimov Although this anthology was published in the eighties, it contains stories from the science fiction masters of the fifties. Some of them are dated, but most of them are simply well-written, exciting tales of man against the universe. Chalice of Death by Robert Silverberg – Earth […]

An Ape, a Griffin, and a Snake Walk into a Monastery

Sin of Origin (Isaac Asimov Presents) by John Barnes (1989) – Okay, I got this book in a box of used science fiction books, and I didn’t have high hopes in spite of the “Isaac Asimov Presents” banner or the six-armed ape riding a flying dinosaur on the cover. I think it’s an interesting concept, but the delivery is a little wonky. Basically, it’s a great novella, a related short story, and a barely related short, short story. The novella is about a monk on […]

Gandalf’s Cousins From Way Out of Town

April 10, 2015 by sabian30 Leave a Comment

Isaac Asimov’s Magical World of Fantasy – Wizards, edited by Isaac Asimov (1983) – Legend has it that Mr. Asimov never had an agent so he was forever publishing anthologies with his name on them that he’d never seen or had sold to two different publishers. For this anthology, I really didn’t care if he had a hand in collecting them or not because they’re so good. As usual with anthologies, I’ll discuss each story, but I may run out of superlatives fast. Mazirian the […]
