Katie O’Neill continues to write charming, inclusive, all ages books

The Tea Dragon Festival by Katie O'Neill

January 22, 2020 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

Katie O’Neill continues to write my favorite all ages books.  This is her second Tea Dragon book, the first was The Tea Dragon Society, which I reviewed for CBR10.  In the tea dragon world, society is made of several species; mundane humans, people with horns/hooves/antlers, animal people, and dragons.  There is a small amount of magic in the world, and it is all brought charmingly to life with O’Neill’s soft illustrations. Both books are wonderfully inclusive.  People come in a wide range of hues.  Relationships […]

I now understand why this book is so beloved : CBRbingo – Classic

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery

October 27, 2019 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

The Little Prince is one of those books that I have been aware of for a long time but had somehow not gotten around to yet.  It’s status as an all time great is why I chose it for the ‘Classic’ square in Cannonball bingo.  I’m using ‘Classic’ for my Reader’s Choice square to replace ‘Remix’. I became aware of the power in The Little Prince, and how it affects readers, through tattoo art relating to the book.  In most every tattoo gallery featuring art inspired […]

Child me would have LOVED this book, adult me thinks it’s pretty great: CBR Bingo – Birthday

Matilda by Roald Dahl

October 1, 2019 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

When looking for which authors have a birthday to fit the bingo requirements, I discovered that Roald Dahl’s birthday is September 13th.  I’ve previously read a few other books by Dahl but had never read Matilda, so this seemed like a good time. When first published in 1988, I would have been eight years old and it would have been perfect for me to discover in about another two years.  However, it escaped notice and when the movie came out in 1996, I was entering my […]

Everyone has felt like Moon Girl at one time or other – #CBR11Bingo: “And so it begins”

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur: The Beginning by Brandon Montclare (writer), Amy Reeder (writer), Natacha Bustos (artist), Marco Failla (artist)

September 14, 2019 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

For a couple years now, people have been telling me to read Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.  I even bought it for my daughters, they read it and loved it, but it sat on the shelf unread by me.  Then an adorable video of a parent and child cosplaying, with a preschool aged Moon Girl and a parent in a blow up dinosaur costume, was posted on the Cannonball Read Book Chat Facebook page by emmalita.  It was adorable and gave me the push to […]

Continuing Adventures of a Mischievous Kitten (CBR11 Bingo)

Chi's Sweet Home, Part 2 by Kanata Konami

July 7, 2019 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

Since this is only the second manga I’ve read, ever, I thought it would count nicely for the CBR11 Bingo square Not My Wheelhouse. When I read Part 1 last month I was taken with Chi and her family and since my library had Part 2 available, I requested it. Why not spend a little more time with this precocious kitten? On the whole I’m glad I picked up the next phase in the story, we follow the family as they move into their new […]

Squirrel Girl continues to delight with choose your own adventure, dating drama, and computer science! (bonus review from Ysakitty)

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Vol. 4: I Kissed a Squirrel and I Liked It by Ryan North (writer), Erica Henderson (artist), Jacob Chabot (artist)

July 3, 2019 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

Squirrel Girl a.k.a. Doreen Green is at the top of my favorite superhero list and I love sharing her with people unfamiliar with this awesome heroine.  My daughters look up to her and you couldn’t ask for a better role model.  In this fourth graphic novel collection there are two particular issues that stand out for their uniqueness in my (albeit limited) comic reading.  The book starts with a choose your own adventure and ends with an issue devoted entirely to using computer science.  In […]
